Intro
Most of us understand the benefits of quality sleep, but few appreciate the advantage of waking up correctly. Even after a good nights sleep, getting woken at the wrong time within your sleep cycle can have a substantially negative effect. It’s been clinically proven to sap energy levels and alter your mood throughout the day. I’ve known about this for sometime now, and I’m certainly no stranger to sunrise alarm clocks. I’ve been using a Philips wake up light for close to a decade now and cringe at the thought of waking with a regular alarm.
Most wake up lights work by gradually increasing the light intensity to bring you out of a deep sleep, before introducing sounds to finally wake you. This method is good, but it still has an effect on your natural sleep pattern. The Sleepace Nox takes a new approach. It intelligently monitors your sleep cycle and is able to pick the optimal moment to wake you. This new method combined with it’s comprehensive sleep analysis is set to take wake up lights to the next level.
Sleepace Nox – Full review
The Sleepace Nox stands 225mm tall and is 105mm wide. It’s surface is a combination of matte grey and glossy white plastic. The majority of the weight is distributed at the base which makes it very stable on flat surfaces.
Its top surface has a central power button and each of its four corners provide additional manual control.
The corner controls allow you to adjust the volume and brightness levels. They are touch sensitive rather than actual buttons and are very responsive, even with the lightest of contact.
Offset slightly from the centre is a small monitor that records the amount of ambient light in the room during the night.
The sensor also makes adjustments to the brightness of the LED display, based on how dark the room is. This is a very useful feature that prevents the display being too bright during the night. Here’s a short video demonstrating it:
Once the unit is powered up for the first time, the display will appear with ’00:00′. At this point you will need to install the Sleepace app on your phone and follow the on-screen instructions. Once complete, the time will set itself automatically and a WiFi symbol will be displayed.
Lamp settings
Turning the lamp on manually produces a white light which can be dimmed or brightened by four increments. The Nox remembers the last light setting and will turn back on at the same level. Accessing the light settings with your smartphone allows you to choose from literally millions of colours.
There’s also a colour cycle mode that makes the Nox slowly transition through the spectrum.
Sleep-Aid mode
When entering sleep-aid mode, you can adjust the colour setting from a warm yellow to a deep red. There’s also a choice of 10 soothing sounds with full volume control. Here’s a short demonstration –
As an outdoorsman, I absolutely love the camp fire noise, however the other half insists on the rain audio. The sound quality is absolutely spot on and we both love this feature. Combined with the warm red glow, it definitely helps us get off to sleep. One small niggle I have, on certain sounds such as the rain, is the point when the audio repeats. For a split second you can hear the transition from the end of the track to the start, it’s not a clean loop. I’m sure this could easily be fixed with an update to the app.
Sleep-aid can be switched on manually by holding the power button for three seconds. A quick tap will turn it off. Alternatively, it will turn itself off once you fall to sleep.
The Nox alarm
Setting the alarm is extremely quick using the app. Once set, it will go off daily at the preferred time. The sound is a pleasant bird song that gradually gets louder as the lamp brightens:
If your smartphone is at your side during the night, Nox will be monitoring your sleep pattern. As your preferred time is approaching, the Sleepace app will know the perfect time to wake you, which may be up to 30 mins earlier. Believe it or not, you’ll wake better at 6:30am if you’re in the lightest part of your sleep cycle, than you would at 7am from a deep slumber.
Sleep analysis
After you’re up, and have turned off the alarm, the Sleepace app will collate all the data from the previous night and generate a report.
I’ve been hugely impressed with the app. The data it creates looks great and is really easy to interpret. The accuracy of the data may be somewhat dependant on your smartphone and its placement. Sleepace do make a rest-on sleep monitor that’s designed to work with the Nox, should you wish to make your data far more consistent. It will also add additional information, such as breathing and heart rate.
Verdict
I really like this product. Not only does it look great, it’s also stacked full of features to help improve your sleep quality. The smartphone app is extremely well made and a pleasure to use.
I really like the fact that the Nox and its app have the potential for updates and future improvements.
