Pros and Cons
Where to Buy?
As an owner of an expensive Canon DSLR camera, I’m often torn between taking it along on trips or leaving it behind in favour of using my S7 Edge instead. Having a good quality clip-on smartphone camera lens is a great way of bridging the gap between the convenience of a phone camera with the quality of a DSLR. So, let’s take a closer look at the Aukey 2-in-1 phone lens and see how it performs.
2Aukey 2-in-1 Smartphone Camera Lens – Full Review
The Aukey 2-in1 Smartphone camera lens consists of two optical components and a universal phone clip. There’s also a drawstring carry pouch, cleaning cloth, lens cap and cover included.
The small lens provides the 10x macro and the larger lens adds the wide angle view. Both are made from an aluminium alloy and are fitted with a coated glass lens to minimise ghosting, reflections, flare, and other artefacts.
Attaching the lens to your smartphone is as easy as it gets. The sprung clip holds well, its rubber surface provides a good grip on your phone and protects it from scratches.
Due to the location of the camera on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, I was unable to position the lens centrally with my Spigen phone case installed. It’s a shame the clip wasn’t a tiny bit longer to accommodate a case. Perhaps this is something Aukey can easily address as the phone clip is an individual component, it could be easily switched for a larger version.
Using it as a Macro lens
With such a high opinion of the S7 Edge’s close-up camera quality, I wasn’t expecting to see much of an improvement. I was pleasantly surprised, to say the least. The Aukey 2-in-1 lens can get twice as close without losing focus and the picture is significantly sharper.
Using it for wide angle scenic shots.
As with the close-up macro shots, the Aukey smartphone camera lens produced a better quality image compared to the S7 Edge on its own.
With the two pictures above taken from the same spot within seconds of each other, it’s clear to see the effect the lens has on the picture. Not only is it a wider shot, but there is also a better contrast and detail.
I took the lens out on a particularly dull and uninspiring day, however, if you’d like to see better examples have a look at some of the customer images on the Amazon product page.
I’ve been hugely impressed by the Aukey 2-in-1 Smartphone camera lens. It provides a cost-effective upgrade to your phone and opens up the door to using additional CPL effects filters to further enhance your shots. I think most phones would have absolutely no problem accommodating the lens with a case fitted. It’s a bit of a struggle on the Galaxy S7 Edge, so a slightly longer phone clip would be a welcome addition to a great product.
