F4 Falcon – Full Review
The F4 Falcon comes inside a tidy looking retail box along with a Type-C USB charging cable and a user manual. The controller is exceptionally compact in its folded state. Measuring just 8cm x 4cm and weighing only 50g, the F4 is truly pocket-sized.
Features
This device is designed to provide left and right paddle buttons to the top of the phone. In addition to the controls, there’s also a turbo button on either side. Pressing the turbo button will toggle through 4 modes. Moreover, there are coloured LED indicator on each wing to identify the current burst mode.
- Default mode (one click, one-shot) – LED off
- 3-burst mode (1 click, 3 shots) – Green LED
- 6-burst mode (1 click, 6 shots) – Amber LED
- 9-burst mode (1 click, 9 shots) – Red LED
Getting Started
As always, it’s wise to fully charge the device on first use. This only takes between 1 to 2 hours. After that, there’s a whopping 40 hours of gaming ahead of you. Furthermore, the F4 Falcon has an impressive 200 hours of standby time.
Preparing the F4 Falcon for fitting to a phone couldn’t be more simple, just open the wings. The mechanism feels very precise with the arms snapping into place. It feels robust and reassuringly well engineered.
Fitting the F4 Falcon to your phone
The base of the F4 Falcon is spring loaded. It will open from 6mm to around 9cm which covers just about every smartphone on the market. Additionally, when pulled out, it will automatically power on.
With a minimal phone case, the F4 should have no problem fitting over. However, those with chunky cases might need to remove them first. The back of the device is well cushioned and there are recesses under the wings that ensure a very stable fit.
Mobile Gaming with the F4 Falcon Controller
You may be able to tell from the photo above, I’m old school. While most gamers will be making use of the F4 Falcon for PUBG and Fortnight, for me, it was all about Vice City – the greatest console game ever made.
I owned the Lousy T-shirt for 100% completion of GTA on the PS2 and really wanted to do it on the mobile version. Having tried to get into the game again, I soon realised it was going to be difficult without top buttons for handbrake turns and aiming.
The GameSir F4 Falcon controller has made that dream a possibility. In addition, my two boys have both spent time with this device and absolutely love this thing. If there’s one sure-fire way of testing its durability it’s to let them use it. GameSir state that the buttons are tested to last for 5 million presses. So, as long as the boys don’t launch it at the nearest wall in a rage, it should last for many years to come.
Verdict
The F4 Falcon has to be the easiest mobile gaming controller to use. There’s no mucking about with pairing, no lag, no software or apps required, it even turns itself on and off. I really cannot fault this product. If you play mobile games that allow repositioning of on-screen controls, then I can highly recommend this product.
