The Transcend DrivePro 200 has been the most popular affordable Dash Cam for over a year on Amazon.co.uk.

Transcend DrivePro 200 – Summary

The Transcend DrivePro 200 is an affordable dash cam with some really great features and functions. Despite a few small flaws in the design The DrivePro 200 is a great dash camera for the price with a very impressive 1080p resolution and a good level of clarity even during the night.

The Transcend DrivePro 200 Dash Cam

Transcend DrivePro 200 – Features

  • Full HD 1080p recording at 30fps – Max resolution 1960×1080.
  • 160°viewing angle for an extra wide perspective.
  • 2.4 inch LCD viewing screen.
  • Motion G- Sensor to detect impact events and auto protect the recording.
  • Free 16gb memory card (32gb supported) – 16gigs will give you over 400 mins of footage before it loops over.
  • Time and Date stamp on the footage.
  • WiFi support with app for smartphone connectivity to let you stream, download, and share videos.
  • Audio recording – pretty basic audio quality, certainly not in-line with the video quality.

The Transcend DrivePro 200 has a ton of really impressive features and the video quality even at night is exceptionally clear and smooth.  Definitely as good or possibly even better than dash cams costing twice as much.  The DrivePro 200, when activated will continuously record footage and store them in seamless cuts at intervals of 1 minute or more. There is also a red button on the side to activate an emergency mode, which will then protect the footage in a separate folder.  This feature is also automatically started if the dash cam detects an impact.

Here is one of the best video dash cam reviews I have come across so far, featuring the Transcend DrivePro 200.  The video review goes into great detail about all the features and you can see actual recorded footage at 7:40mins and onwards.

Transcend DrivePro 200 – Design (flaws)

Let’s jump straight into the flaws, which are predominantly due to the design of the product.  Firstly it’s size (67mm x 72mm x 35mm). Not the biggest dash cam I’ve seen, but certainly not the most compact either.  It’s smaller than most Sat Navs, so it’s not really an issue when it comes to obscuring your view, but it’s visibility when left in the car is more obvious.

This brings me to appearance of the Transcend DrivePro 200.  The body of the dash cam is a nice matt black texture which is great, but for some reason I cannot understand, they have used a bright chrome finish around the bezel.  This unnecessary shiny finish, the WiFi logo and the 1080p text around the lens stands outs like a sore thumb. It’s sure to catch the eye of any potential thief looking to make some quick cash.

If you are the type of person who always removes tech from your car when parked, I guess this wouldn’t really be an issue.  For a lazy person like me, however, I’d certainly opt for a less visible product. The Transcend DrivePro 200 may attract too much unwanted attention.

Perhaps people are less likely to buy a product that looks cheap, but in the case of a dash cam I think the cheaper it looks, the better. It would be fairly easy to disguise these features with insulation tape or a black marker pen,  but for some this might not be a desirable option.

Transcend DrivePro 200 – Summary

Despite my reservations regarding the appearance of the Transcend DrivePro 200, it is a very solid performing dash cam and most definitely worth its price tag.  The DrivePro 200 is currently the UK’s most popular dash camera on Amazon with over a thousand 5 star customer reviews!

  1. Like Richard (24th Sept 16) I’m having problems with an ‘SD error’ reading on my Transcend DrivePro 200. My camera is just over a year old and as a result of this no longer functioning. I’ve replaced the SD card and am getting the same error message with the new one. There are some websites offering new software, downloadable via the SD card. Will this work? Are there any instructions and web links available?

  2. Purchased a Drive Pro 200 about a year ago, took it out of the old car about six months ago and fitted into the new car three weeks ago. Was running ok but now reports error on the SD card, have checked the card and found it last recorded two weeks ago. Am I right in assuming that the system has a loop which should write over the oldest files. By the way the SD card reads full. What have I done wrong

  3. The reviewer says at 17:11

“You can record and stream the video at the same time if you want”.

But the video streamed through the AV out cable is CROPPED SHOWING ONLY THE TOP LEFT of the picture, cropping off about 25% on the right and 50% below, displaying only about 37% of the video area on your TV.

  4. Ever since I lost my no claims unfairly due to a lack of evidence or an honest witness I’ve been using dashboard cameras in my car, the Transcend DrivePro 200 is my third one, the other 2 were cheap and unreliable. This one is a mile better, especially at night, l highly recommend it.

  5. Thanks for the tips on disguising the dash can, it does stand out quite a lot especially on a bright day when the suns bouncing off the silver trim.

  6. The Transcend DrivePro 200 is a decent dash cam, even with the chrome trim well worth the money, most of the cheap budget dash cams I’ve seen are not worth bothering with.

    • Hi Mallick, Thanks for your comment, The Transcend DrivePro 200 is certainly not in the “cheap budget” category, even though it’s price is low compared to many other high end dash cams, it’s up there with the best.

  7. I had a real cheap dash cam, the footage was appalling especially during the night, this one definitely looks up to the job

  8. I totally agree on the chrome bezel being an issue. I faced two issues with my DrivePro 200.

    a) the display would flicker a lot upon initial power up. It would stabilize after sometime. Not sure if anyone else has seen this issue.

    b) To fix the chrome bezel issue, I did a matt insulation tape wrap around the lens. Not only did it cover the chrome ring, but also the lettering on the front of the lens. See pics here –

    • Hi Jai,

Thanks for your comment, great post on the DrivePro 200, and the insulation tape stealth-up! I used duct tape in the end, it’s width allowed me to make a single round piece for the front face to avoid the creases.

  9. Hi, nice review. I bought the Trancend 200 Dash cam but had trouble viewing the recorded footage on my PC. Turns out the regular windows media player doesn’t like the codecs or something, I was advised to download a player called VLC,. which is free and works perfectly.

  10. I see you point about it’s visibility to potential criminals, but I take mine out if I’m not confident about the area I park it in, so this doesn’t effect me. This is my first dash cam and I cannot fault it, I haven’t had an accident yet (thankfully) but I’ve had some fun showing friends how stupid some people are on the road sometimes.
