Need help choosing a high capacity power bank 20000mAh or over?

If you are looking to buy a high capacity portable battery charger but are unsure of which specifications or features are important here’s some info that may be of help.

  • Capacity – Measured in mAh’s (milliampere-hour) is basically the amount of storage the power bank has. This amount is just a guide, the actual amount the battery delivers is dependent on its efficiency. This can be anywhere from 70%-85%. If you are charging a phone with a battery size of 2000mAh with a 20000mAh power bank, you’d get 10 full charges if it was 100% efficient (this will never happen). In reality, you are far more likely to get 7-8 charges.
  • Max Output – This refers to the overall output of the power bank. Typically more important on a high capacity portable charger, when recharging multiple devices at the same time. If your Smartphone requires 1A and your tablet requires 2.1A then a power bank with a 3.1A Max output would be sufficient.  If you were then to plug in the third device, the 3.1A would be shared, and the recharge time would take longer.
  • Safety Systems – Most, if not all power banks will offer protection against short-circuits, over-current and overloads. Usually, the power bank will shut off and will require you to connect the charging cable to reset the system.
  • Pass-through charge technology –  This allows you to plug devices into the power bank as it’s being recharged.  On high capacity power banks, this feature is extremely useful and not often seen.
  • Additional Technology – Each power bank will have its own terminology, Anker calls theirs ‘PowerIQ‘, RAVPower use the name ‘iSmart‘, Zendure has ‘Zen+‘ and the list goes on. There are some variables depending on the manufacturer, but in general, this relates to an adaptable output from each USB port. When you plug in a device, the power bank will identify it’s maximum recharge speed and deliver the correct amount of power.
  • Battery Quality – This is something that you will need to consider. It’s hard to know about the quality of the Lithium battery inside without cracking the power bank open and having a look (not advisable). Generally speaking, if it’s ridiculously cheap it will likely be of poor quality. My advice is to choose a recognised brand that has some control over its own R&D. There are so many companies attaching brand names on generic OEM power banks and selling them cheaply.  Portable charging devices like the Zendure A-Series power bank do cost more, but it’s for a good reason. – back to the list

  1. i wish you would talk more about the Nut & Volts of these particularly what batteries they use
the Ravopower and Anker both use brank name LG/Panasonic cells (18650) they are on the top of their game for size and capacity
please report what Zendure EasyAcc Tronsmart use for batteries

  2. Please check out the ZMI 20,000 mAh power bank – PowerPack Aura. Similar specs with 27W USB-C PD fast charging but only $35.99.

  3. I got the Zendure A8 20000mah powerbank before it was upgraded to have Quick Charge 3.0, I really want to upgrade, but my current one works so well! Maybe I can give it away as a Christmas present and treat myself to the new one 😛

  4. Best “rugged” power bank suggestion? Price not a major concern but a couple options are appreciated. Will be used in cold / wet / camping / backpacking conditions.

  5. I bought the Zendure A8 power bank years ago before it updated its feature to include Quick Charge 3.0 I have an S7 Edge and my wife has an S8, I’m so tempted to splash out on an upgrade. Do you know how much faster the new Zendure A8 will charge compared to the original power bank?

  6. Did anyone notice that only Zendure A8 has a digital display that accurately tells you exactly how much power it has left? That feature is awesome. Zendure A8 is also the only one that has pass-through charging. It also has the highest output: 6.1Amps!

    • You’re quite right Teddy, the Zendure A8 got a serious upgrade recently. It’s definitely going to be higher up the list, I’m just waiting for a review unit to arrive.

  7. So pleased to see the Zendure A8 portable high capacity power bank got the Quick Charge 3.0 update, I love the original design of the power bank, but I really wanted a QC 3.0 compatible charger for my HTC 10 phone.

  8. Took your advice and bought the Ravpower 22000mah power bank, it arrived the next day (fully charged) and works like a absolute dream! Thank you! 🙂

    • You’re welcome, I’m currently using the RavPower Quick Charge 3.0 charger as my main high capacity power bank, but the 22000mAh is just as good, just takes a little longer to recharge.

  9. Dear simon. Tha’ks for this brillant article. So usuful and clear! I was wondering though, how do i determin the output (or input? Not sure) my sony z5 xperia compact needs? And my galaxy tab 4? Where do i find this information in order to know what lax output i should be fine with…
    Thanks a lot!

    • Hi Jack, I believe the Sony Z5 has a 1.5A input and the Galaxy 4 would probably need a bit more. I wouldn’t be concerned about using any of the power banks on this list for either device. It’s actually the Phone or Tablet that’s drawing the charge rather than the power bank pushing it out if that makes sense? If you had a device that only required 0.5A plugged into a 2.4A output of a Power Bank, that’s all it would draw, the other 1.9A is redundant. Hope that helps and thanks for the feedback.

    • Thanks, Andy! After reviewing so many high capacity power banks over the last few years, I think I’ve done the legwork required to make a useful and accurate list on the subject. I’m also looking into buying some accurate testing equipment to get some numbers on the actual efficiency rates of each of the power banks.

  10. I visited quite a few sites today in search of buying advice regarding power banks. Your site was by far the best. Your research was thorough and concise and eliminated lots of the “junk” that other sites waste time on. As a result, I was able to find just the right power bank for my needs.
Many thanks for your excellent recommendations. I also appreciated your explanation on the specs of power banks and the importance of each one relative to user needs.

    • Roy, Really appreciate the positive feedback, I’m amazed how little effort some of the more ‘well-established’ review sites make these days, especially when it comes to power bank reviews.

  11. I bought the ravpower quick charge 3.0 power bank, I think my phone has Qualcomm 2.0 will this effect the speed?

    • Qualcomm Quick Charge technology is fully backward compatible, so if your phone has QC 2.0, a Quick Charge 3.0 power bank will provide a QC 2.0 equivalent fast charge – hope that helps.

  12. Anyone with a Quick Charge compatible phone should definetly opt for a power bank with Quick Charge technology, it makes a huge difference. You should feature more high capacity power banks with QC 2.0 and 3.0.

    • Hi Techman, thanks for the feedback! Rather than swarm the top of the list with Quick charge 3.0 power banks, I’ve added some alternative options to the RAVPower QC 3.0 charger. I do agree with you that it makes a massive difference to recharge times, but that’s only if you have the Quick Charge wall adapter too. Anker have just started selling their quick charge power bank with an included QC3.0 wall charger, seems like a sensible thing for the others to do as well.

  13. The RAVpower 26800mAH power bank should be top of the list IMHO, max amps is worth more that pass through charging

    • To get a good quality 20000mAh high capacity power bank for under $40 is a bargain, but considering the EasyAcc Monster has the double charging inputs, it’s seriously good value for money.

  14. I was planning on buying the Zendure A8, seems like they are only currently offering the Zendure A3 or A4 in the UK, shame because I really like the design 🙁

    • You may be able to buy the Zendure A8 from the US Amazon site at a cheaper price, which may compensate for the additional cost for the international postage? Worth a try, it’s a great Power Bank.

  15. Thanks for the list, I’d have rated the RAVPower 26800mAh Power Bank higher, it’s got the biggest max output of them all, by far. For me, I often need to recharge 2 tablets at a time and a phone. The RAVPower Power Bank is the only one the this whole entire list with enough output to manage that without trickle charging them.

  16. Nice list, I was looking for an even larger power bank than 20000mAh, it seems like there are not that many decent ones to choose from, is there a reason for this? Thanks

    • Hi Ian,

There are very few good power banks over 30000mAh. The only high capacity power banks I’ve seen above the 20000mAh bracket are poor quality and really cheap. The capacity can be a little deceiving sometimes, you will find some that suggest capacities of 50000mAh, but trust me, they are closer to 20000mAh. My advice would be to buy two good quality power banks with 20000mAh rather than a poor quality 40000mAh battery. That way you can recharge twice as quick.

  17. The Zendure A8 does look really good, but it seems far more expenive than all the other battery packs on the list. The 20000mah LimeFuel Blast power bank seems much better value for money in my opinion. They both have pass-through charging and the LimeFuel has an extra 1A max output.

    • Hi Liam, the LimeFuel Blast is an awesome 20000mAh power bank and considerably cheaper than the Zendure A8. I do think the A8 has a far better build quality and some additional technology that sets it apart. It’s real important to have a Power bank that you can trust, the Zendure is so durable, they run it over with a car and it’s undamaged. The standby time on it is fantastic too, for a high capacity portable battery to still have 95% of it’s original charge after standing around for 6 months is pretty unique.

  18. The EasyAcc 20000mAh power bank is just what I was looking for, I burn through portable batteries like mad with photography work. I currently use two 10000mAh battery packs, because there is enough time to charge each of them over night, A 20000mAh typically takes around 12 hours from a mains adapter. Having a double input it’s ideal, I’m surprised more high capacity power banks haven’t added the feature, is this the only one that has it?

  19. Thanks for the guide, the whole mAh capacity thing was a little confusing. Why don’t they just label the power bank with the actual capacity after the loss of charge is account for?

    • Hi Bev, I think there are quite a few variables that will effect the efficiency. Some power banks may perform better than others, even if they are the same make and model. Even the cable itself and the device you are charging can effect it. All of the ones above perform at the top end of the scale, I’ve tested a few others that have struggled to achieve even 60% efficiency.

  20. Hi Oscar,
Thanks for your comment, I totally agree it’s an amazing portable power bank, an absolute beast. I have the Zendure A8 and the A2, they are both awesome, the A8 for it’s huge capacity and the A2 for it’s compact size, I can’t fault them.

  21. I backed the Zendure Power Bank when it was being crowd funded, it’s an awesome charger. Very few have the ability to charge devices while also re-charging. This feature is amazing especially on a high capacity power bank. I plug my tablet into the Zendure and plug the Zendure into the adapter, once the iPad is fully charged the Zendure automatically stops feeding it juice and continues recharging itself until it’s also fully charged, then it shuts off the charge too.- Love it!
